No single garment of clothing in your wardrobe is more significant than your wedding dress, and as such, the attire should accent your distinctive style. However, achieving a bridal style that appears distinctive from all the rest is no easy feat unless you choose to design your own custom gown. To help those brides who wish to distinctly stand apart from the rest, acclaimed stylist and star of TLC’s Something Borrowed, Something New Sam Saboura offers his expert tips on how to personalize your wedding dress.

1. Embrace embellishments.

When in doubt, add elegant embellishments. “Don’t be afraid to get crafty! Adding crystals, pearls and other gorgeous embellishments to the bodice of a less expensive gown can really up the wow factor,” Saboura advises. “Some of the most exclusive designers in the world opt for glued-on appliqués and embeltiments — even on gowns that cost upwards of $10,000. With some quality fabric glue and high end trims and notions, you can create a couture look on any budget.”

2. Add vintage touches.

“I love the idea of a bride incorporating a piece of heirloom fabric into her dress from different generations of women in her family like her mother or grandmother. This is a wonderful way to honor the women in her life on her big day,” Saboura suggests.

3. Underscore the underskirt with colorful fabric.

“If a bride loves a shot of color but wants to keep her look more traditional in white or ivory, the underskirt of her dress presents a great opportunity to add some interest, print or color,” Saboura says.

4. Customize with a cape.

Channel your inner prima donna on your wedding day by sauntering down the aisle in an operatic caped gown. “Luckily for fashion-forward brides who love this look on celebrities like Solange Knowles, [capes] are an easy personalization to your look that will help you make a grand entrance on your big day!” Saboura proposes.

5. Go with a godet.

Even the simplest details can distinguish your gown from any other, Saboura reminds brides. “A godet, or triangle insert of fabric, in a soft blue hue or in heirloom lace can be added to the back of the skirt or inset into the train to create some drama and personalize the look,” Saboura says.

6. Design a detachable skirt.

“Overskirts are super on trend: It would be gorgeous to create a detachable overskirt from a mother’s cathedral length veil or from the dress of her skirt and belt it over the bride’s new gown for the ceremony,” he advises.
